Report: Trump administration studying ways to penalize currency manipulators

The Trump administration is assessing the scope of its power to penalize countries whose currencies it believes are undervalued, CNBC reported, citing two people with direct knowledge of the review. President Trump so far has not made good on his promise to label China as a currency manipulator on day one of his presidency. One law the administration is looking at is the Trade Enforcement and Trade Facilitation Act, the report said, which would allow the president to block future federal contracts with those countries and to choke off government financing for U.S. businesses seeking to invest there.

U.S. stocks open flat after 4th-quarter GDP revision

U.S. stocks opened flat after fourth-quarter gross domestic product was revised higher, a sign that U.S. economic growth is accelerating more quickly than some economists had expected. The S&P 500 index shed one point to 2,360, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 2.5 points at 20,657. The Nasdaq Composite Index was off by one point at 5,897, on track for its first daily loss in a week. Stocks have largely recovered from a selloff that followed the withdrawal Friday of a plan backed by President Donald Trump to repeal and replace Obamacare, but investors are still waiting to see if tax reform, his next legislative priority, will face similar difficulties. Shares of Lululemon Athletica Inc. [s lulu] slumped after several analysts cut their price targets for the retailer’s stock. Cenovus Energy Inc. shares tumbled after ConocoPhillips [c: cop] said it would sell its majority stake in its Canadian oil-sands assets to the company. Apple Inc. shares probably also merit watching, after finishing at a record high on Wednesday for the second straight day.

Goodyear stock tumbles after Goldman Sachs downgrade

Shares of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. fell 1% in premarket trade Thursday after the stock was downgraded to neutral from buy at Goldman Sachs. While expected demand for tire replacement remains high, the analysts say there is near-term pricing uncertainty as Goodyear announced price increases while raw material prices go down and rebate activity increases. Additionally, Goodyear’s valuation is now more in line with its peers and already reflects these factors. The analysts cut their price target to $33 from $34. Shares of Goodyear have gained 17% in the past three months, compared to the S&P 500’s gain of 5.5%.

Six Flags won’t pursue REIT deal, adds $500 million to stock buyback plan

Six Flags Entertainment Corp. said Thursday that it has decided not to pursue a spinoff of its real estate assets into a real estate investment trust. The theme park company said it determined that a REIT deal would not be in the best interests of shareholders, given the costs, the operational complexity, the limits on futures strategic flexibility and future growth opportunities. The company said it could revisit the idea in the future. Separately, Six Flags said it expanded its share-buyback plan by $500 million, which it expects to fund with its $1.2 billion debt offering, also announced Thursday. The company said it expects to continue to increase its annual dividend at a high-single-digit to low-double-digit percentage range for a number of years. The stock, which was still inactive in premarket trade, has lost 2.4% year to date, while the S&P 500 has gained 5.5%.

Russian ruble hits 18-month high

The Russian ruble climbed on Thursday to its strongest level against the dollar in 18 months, as relatively high domestic interest rates attracted foreign investors to Russian assets. The dollar fell 0.8% to 56.17 in recent trade, compared with 56.62 rubles late Wednesday in New York. The recent moves comes as oil has been volatile, though the commodity has regained some ground over the past week. Because Russia is the world’s second-largest oil exporter, and it depends on petroleum revenues to fund much of its federal budget, its currency tends to trade in lockstep with the price of oil, said Piotr Matys, an emerging-market currency strategist at Rabobank. “The only factor supporting the ruble right now seems to be the substantial interest rate differential between domestic rates and external rates,” Matys said, adding that the currency seems overvalued. Last week, the Russian central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 9.75%. The “hawkish cut,” as Matys called it, actually helped boost the currency because it signaled that the central bank intends to lower interest rates more slowly in 2017. In 2016, the central bank cut rates in half-a-percentage point increments. Oil prices edged lower on Thursday, with Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, off 0.3% at $52.40 in recent trade, though it remained up 3% on the week. Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered public remarks at the International Arctic Forum on Thursday, but Matys said his comments had little impact on the currency.

Lululemon’s stock plunges toward biggest loss in over 8 years as analysts cut ratings, targets

Shares of Lululemon Athletica Inc. plunged 19% in premarket trade Thursday, as a disappointing fiscal fourth-quarter report and outlook prompted multiple downgrades and price target cuts. The selloff puts the yoga gear seller’s stock on track to open at the lowest level since January 2016, and to suffer its biggest one-day percentage loss since December 2008. Analyst Ike Boruchow at Wells Fargo cut his rating to market perform, after being at outperform since January 2016, and cut his stock valuation range to $49 to $50 from $78 to $80. Boruchow said he was particularly surprised by the “significant erosion” anticipated in the ecommerce business. “Slowing sales and moderating [gross margins] puts bull thesis on the mat,” Boruchow wrote in a note to clients. Susquehanna analyst Sam Poser downgraded the stock to neutral from positive and slashed his price target to $57 from $82, citing weak sales trends and limited visibility on a recovery. Of the 36 analysts surveyed by FactSet, no less than half have cut stock price targets. The stock had gained 2% year to date through Wednesday, while the S&P 500 had tacked on 5.5%.
