It’s officially the Dog Days of Summer, so this week we’re celebrating our furry friends — cats included — with design-savvy, pet-friendly spaces, DIY recipes and more.

We all love our babies (whether they’re of the human, canine or feline variety), but let’s face it, it can be hard to live stylishly with kids and pets running around the house. Designer Brian Patrick Flynn found a solution for this common decorating dilemma in a formerly lackluster Los Angeles living room. Using durable fabrics, smart storage solutions and playful touches, he created a space that works for the whole family. 1. Slipcovered Sofa. For families with kids and pets, slipcovered sofas are the perfect living room solution – when they get dirty, just toss the slipcovers in the washing machine to freshen them up. Covered in a navy linen blend, this sofa features extra-deep seats and three layers of thick padding on the arms and back for added comfort.

2. Storage Ottoman. In the original space, an upholstered storage ottoman serves as a coffee table, a place to store toys and extra seating when needed. Learn how to make your own storage ottoman, or buy one ready-made, like this orange patterned piece on casters. Toss the kids’ or dogs’ toys inside when you have company and move it around the room with ease for an additional seat.

3. Dachshund Throw Pillow. Show your love for your four-legged family members by working them into your decor – try a throw pillow with a graphic, animal-inspired print. This playful, reversible dachshund pillow would pop against a neutral sofa.
