FBI may not need Apple to unlock iPhone after all

The U.S government is requesting a continuance of the hearing scheduled for Tuesday in its suit that seeks to compel Apple Inc. to unlock an iPhone so that it can uncover more data related to the December shootings in San Bernardino. Late Monday afternoon, U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker filed a motion for a continuance in U.S. District Court in the Central District of California, saying that on Sunday, an outside party demonstrated to the FBI a possible method for unlocking the iPhone used by one of the shooters. “Testing is required to determine whether it is a viable method that will not compromise data on Farook’s iPhone,” the U.S. attorney wrote in an application for a continuance. “If the method is viable, it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple Inc. set forth in the All Writs Act Order in this case.” The U.S. attorney said it contacted Apple to request its position and that counsel for Apple has requested a telephonic status conference with the court.
