Policy forum dissolves after Trump’s Charlottesville remarks: report

President Donald Trump’s so-called strategic and policy forum has disbanded, CNBC reported, citing a member. The council of business leaders is separate from a manufacturing advisory group that several CEOs including the head of Campbell Soup have left in the wake of Trump’s remarks about violence at a white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. The White House did not immediately reply to a request for comment about the strategic and policy forum.

3M’s Thulin becomes latest CEO to quit Trump manufacturing council

Inge Thulin, the chief executive of 3M , said Wednesday he is leaving President Donald Trump’s manufacturing jobs council. His announcement makes him the latest leader to quit the group following Trump’s initial failure to single out white supremacists for last weekend’s violence in Charlottesville, Va. Thulin said he believes the council is no longer a vehicle for 3M to advance its goals of making the U.S. “stronger, healthier and more prosperous for all people.”

Serious Mortgage Delinquency Ticks Higher

Although the number of borrowers who applied to refinance their mortgages expanded, a week-over-week drop in applications to finance a home purchase offset the gain.

There was virtually no seasonally adjusted change from the preceding week in the volume of new retail applications for residential loans during the week ended Aug. 11.

That is according to the Market Composite Index, a measure of mortgage application volume. The index fell 1 percent from the previous report without any seasonal adjustments.

Dow needs about 40 points to retake its all-time closing high

The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Wednesday was trading modestly higher, but the climb was enough to put within a reach a fresh record. The blue-chip gauge was less than 40 points, at its peak level in early trade at 22,081, of surpassing its Aug. 7 record of 22,118.42, according to FactSet data. The Dow’s intraday peak of 22,179.11 on Aug. 8, however, may be a tougher mark to surpass. Overall the Dow was up 0.4% at 22,080 in late-morning trade on Wednesday, the S&P 500 index gained 0.3% at 2,472, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was 0.4% higher at 6,356 on the session. Those benchmarks are further away from records because of a divergence between blue-chips and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, but are still relatively close to retouching their all-time highs. The S&P 500’s closing record stands at 2,480.91, hit Aug. 7 and its intraday record is at 2,490.98, reached Aug. 8, while the Nasdaq’s last record close was July 26 at 6,422.75 and its intraday marker is 6,460.84, achieved July 27. An abatement of tensions between the U.S. and North Korea has provided some catalyst for stocks to return to testing their upper limits. Meanwhile, Wall Street is looking ahead to a 2 p.m. release of minutes from the Federal Reserve’s policy-setting meeting in July, which could influence stocks, bonds, currencies and dollar-priced commodities, with an expectation the central bank will hint the start of an unwind of its $4.5 trillion balance sheet as soon as next month.

The nation’s consumers have increased their leverage in home financing compared to the same quarter last year, when the average balance was $192,749.

Dick’s Sporting Goods downgraded on weak “profit profile”

Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. was downgraded to hold from buy at Canaccord Genuity on concerns that heavy promotions are hurting the company. The price target was cut to $27 from $52. “To say we overstayed our welcome on Dick’s Sporting Goods is an understatement,” analysts said. “The elements to our buy thesis have all but completely eroded and the profit profile of the business has fundamentally downshifted.” Canaccord analysts led by Camilo Lyon cite “heavy” discounts in hunting, electronics, like fitness trackers, and apparel, including licensed apparel. Analysts say it will take into next year to clear excess inventory in the hunting category. “The broader concern stems from the fact that the company believes this is the new normal for aggressive pricing tactics,” the note said. Dick’s Sporting Goods shares are up 3.1% in Wednesday trading, but down more than 18% for the week so far, after reporting second-quarter results. The company’s shares have fallen nearly 48% for the year to date while the S&P 500 index is up 10.4% for the period.

S&P 500 rises again, but NYSE’s new lows top new highs for 6th-straight session

Although the S&P 500 was headed for a fourth-straight gain, to within a fraction of its record close, the number of NYSE-listed stocks hitting new 52-week lows in intraday trade is above the number of stocks hitting new lows for a sixth-straight session. That would be the longest streak of new lows topping new highs since the eight-day stretch ending Nov. 4, 2016. On Wednesday, new lows reached 91 in morning trade, while new highs were at 65. The S&P 500 was up 0.3%, and has rallied 1.3% the past four sessions, and was just 0.4% away from its Aug. 7 record close of 2,480.91. On Nov. 4, the S&P 500 had closed at 2,085.18, or 4.8% below its previous record close of 2,190.15 on Aug. 15, 2016. During that streak of new lows above new highs, the S&P 500 had declined on each of those days.
