United Tech, Goldman’s stocks contribute more than half of Dow’s slump

The Dow Jones Industrial Average early Tuesday was trading about 100 points lower, with the bulk of that downturn driven by declines in shares of United Technologies Corp. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. . United Tech and Goldman combined were cutting more than 50 points from the Dow in early morning trade. Travelers Inc. also pushed the gauge firmly lower. United Tech’s moves come after the industrial conglomerate said late Monday it had reached a deal to buy airplane-parts maker Rockwell Collins Inc. for $23 billion. Heightened tensions between the West and North Korea were cited as the main reason behind the market’s retreat after Pyongyang tested a hydrogen bomb over the weekend. Other benchmarks were trading in decline as well. The S&P 500 index was down 0.4% at 2,466, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was trading 0.5% lower at 6,403.

UPDATED: Insmed shares skyrocket 130% on positive late-stage results for rare lung disease therapy

Insmed Inc. shares skyrocketed 130% in extremely heavy Tuesday morning trade after the company announced that a phase 3 trial for its rare lung disease therapy met its primary endpoint. The company said it plans to pursue accelerated approval for the therapy, ALIS, which was previously granted breakthrough therapy designation and fast track status by the Food and Drug Administration. ALIS is intended for treatment-refractory nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease caused by mycobacterium avium complex, a rare and serious disease that has such symptoms as fever, weight loss, cough, blood in mucus and night sweats. NTM lung disease has become more prevalent in the U.S. in recent years, and treatments fail relatively frequently. ALIS is a formulation of the antibiotic amikacin that can be taken once a day. Amikacin’s use is “limited by the need to administer it intravenously and by toxicity to hearing, balance and kidney function,” Insmed said. By contrast the technology used in ALIS brings the antibiotic directly to the lung, which “prolongs the release of amikacin in the lungs while minimizing systemic exposure thereby offering the potential for decreased systemic toxicities,” the company said. Relative to guideline-based therapy (GBT), rates of safety issues in patients treated with ALIS and GBT was higher, though safety issues “were predominately mild or moderate in nature and generally declined after the second month of treatment,” the company said. The dropout rate for patients on GBT was about 9%, while the dropout rate for patients on ALIS and GBT was 19.6%. Insmed shares have surged 84.5% over the last three months to $28, compared with a 1.2% rise in the S&P 500 .

Delta Air’s stock drops after carrier cuts guidance for key revenue metric, operating margin

Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc. dropped 1.7% in premarket trade Tuesday, after the air carrier cut its outlook for third-quarter passenger unit revenue and operating margin. Delta said in a statement that it now expects passenger unit revenue growth of 2% to 3%, compared with guidance of 2.5% to 4.5% growth provided in July, “as the recovery in domestic close-in yields has been slower than anticipated.” The company now expects third-quarter operating margin of 16.5% to 17.5%, compared with previous guidance of 18% to 20%, given higher fuel prices and close-in yield softness. The all-in fuel price is now expected to be in the range of $1.68 to $1.73, up from previous guidance of $1.55 to $1.60. Separately, Delta said its total system August load factor was 87.9%, up from 84.4% a year ago. The stock had lost 7.5% over the past three months through Friday, while the NYSE Arca Airline Index has shed 8.2% and the S&P 500 had gained 1.7%.

This year, global growth is contributing to the U.S. economy after having been a major downside risk, she said. The outlook has improved in Europe, Japan, Canada and China, Brainard said.
