Stock market holds steady after Fischer announces resignation from Fed

U.S. stocks held on to slight gains Wednesday morning following news that Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer planned to step down from his key role in the U.S. central bank. Fischer, viewed as a centrist on the Fed, is expected to leave for personal reasons as early as next month. His departure potentially leaves two of the most important positions for the Fed in play, with Chairwoman Janet Yellen not expected to extend her term when it ends in coming months. The shifts occur as the central bank is normalizing interest-rate policy and gearing up to unwind its $4.5 trillion crisis-era balance sheet, both moves could have the effect of lifting borrowing costs for individuals and U.S. corporations. The market reaction to the news has been muted so far. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was tentatively higher up 0.3% at 21,813, the S&P 500 index was 0.2% higher at 2,462, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was trading flat at 6,370. Lower borrowing costs and an era of asset-purchases in the aftermath of the 2007-’09 financial crisis has underpinned rising asset values, market participants have said. The 10-year Treasury note was little changed at 2.07%, holding its lowest level since November as lingering jitters over geopolitical tensions with North Korea hurt risk appetite and fueled buying in so-called haven assets. Meanwhile, a measure of the U.S. dollar was 0.2% lower at 92.082. The ICE U.S. Dollar Index measures the buck against a basket of six currencies.

Iamgold’s stock rally after gold discovery and upgrade extends win streak to longest in 6 years

Shares of Iamgold Corp. surged 1.7% in morning trade Wednesday, putting them on track for the longest win streak in nearly six years, after the gold mine operator was upgraded at CIBC World Markets in the wake of a gold discovery announcement. The stock, which was trading at the highest level seen since April 1, 2013, was headed for a 7th-straight gain, which would be the longest win streak since the 7-session stretch ending Oct. 28, 2011. Late Tuesday, the Toronto-based company confirmed a “significant gold discovery exceeding initial targets” at the Saramacca deposits. Early Wednesday, CIBC analyst David Haughton upgraded Iamgold to outperformer, after being at neutral since Dec. 9, 2016 and raised his stock price target to $8.50 from $6.50. “The new Saramacca resourse is a ‘game-changer’ to drive lower costs and better valuation at Rosebel,” Haughton wrote in a note to clients. He estimates Saramacca will add over 200,000 ounces per year of production at Rosebel, with indicated resource grades that are 120% higher than current Rosebel reserves. The stock has now soared 39.5% over the past three months, while the VanEck Gold Miners ETF has climbed 6.1% and the S&P 500 has gained 1.4%.

Roku launches free, ad-supported movie channel

Streaming device maker Roku Inc. on Wednesday said it has launched its own channel on the Roku platform. Whereas Roku devices generally support streaming apps from other companies, such as Netflix Inc. , Amazon.com Inc , Time Warner Inc-owned HBO and AT&T Inc.’s DirecTV Now, Roku will now have its own branded service available on Roku devices for free. Roku has capitalized on the rise of cord-cutting and an intensifying streaming TV landscape. The company filed for an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission last Friday, seeking $100 million in funding. Roku’s new streaming channel will feature a collection of Hollywood films with no subscription, fee or logins required. Roku plans to make its money with an ad-supported model, much like watching a movie on TNT. But Roku says it plans to have, on average, about half of the ads per programming hour compared to traditional TV. “With the Roku Channel, we’re responding to consumer demand and helping content publishers deliver content through a new experience that makes finding free entertainment easy,” said head of programming at Roku, Rob Holmes.
