PPG prepares new bid for Akzo Nobel after first offer failed: Bloomberg

PPG Industries Inc. is still eyeing a takeover of Akzo Nobel NV , preparing another bid for the Dutch paints and chemicals company after its first attempt failed earlier in March, according to Bloomberg. The financial details of a potential deal weren’t disclosed. Akzo Nobel on March 9 rejected a $22.1 billion takeover proposal from PPG, saying the offer “substantially undervalues” the company. PPG, however, called the bid an “attractive and comprehensive proposal.” A spokesperson from Akzo Nobel told MarketWatch that “we reacted to the initial proposal from PPG, but we haven’t heard anything subsequent to that.” A representative from PPG wasn’t immediately available to comment. Activist investor Elliott Management Corp., which has owned a stake in Akzo Nobel since 2016, is pushing the Dutch paint maker to engage with takeover talks with PPG, which faces local Dutch political opposition to the takeover. Shares of Akzo Nobel rose 3.3% in early Tuesday trade.

Northern Irish politician Martin McGuinness has died at the age of 66, after suffering a rare heart disease, media reports said Tuesday. The influential Sinn Féin politician was a former IRA leader who became a key negotiator in the Northern Irish peace process, which resulted in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. In January, he relinquished his role as deputy first minister in Northern Ireland in protest against an energy scandal, a move that triggered a “snap,” or out-of-cycle, election.

Wal-Mart announces retail tech incubator in Silicon Valley

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Monday it was launching a Silicon Valley-based innovation center to identify future trends in retail and commerce. The standalone incubator, known as Store No. 8, will invest in and work with venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, early-stage startups and academics, focusing on fields including robotics, augmented reality, machine learning and artificial intelligence, according a Wal-Mart spokesman. The project was announced by Marc Lore, chief executive of Wal-Mart’s e-commerce operations, at the ShopTalk conference in Las Vegas. The new investment business is part of a broader effort to capture a larger share of the e-commerce market, which began with last year’s acquisition of Jet.com, which Lore founded. Wal-Mart has been on an e-commerce shopping spree so far in 2017, acquiring ShoeBuy in January, Moosejaw in February and Modcloth last week.

Esperion Therapeutics stock surges 52% after it says the FDA gave its drug program positive feedback

Esperion Therapeutics Inc. shares surged 52.0% in morning trade Monday after the company said the Food and Drug Administration gave it positive feedback on a cholesterol-lowering drug, saying that the late-stage program is enough to support approval. The company plans to apply for approval by the first half of 2019, with results from the phase 3 trial expected by the second quarter of 2018. The drug is intended for patients with elevated low density lipoprotein cholesterol, specifically as a supplementary treatment to statin therapy in patients with high cardiovascular disease risk, according to Esperion’s proposed product label. The area is one that drugmakers have been targeting lately, with disappointing results, as seen with the pricey PCSK9 inhibitors made by Amgen and Regeneron . Esperion’s Monday statement about the FDA’s feedback “surprised” RBC Capital Markets analyst Michael Yee, who rates the company sector perform and raised its price target from $30 to $45 (shares were trading at $35 as of Monday morning). “Indeed, the caveat and risk is FDA can say anything but ultimately a decision is based on the totality of risk/benefit after all the Phase III data including safety is in hand and the regulatory environment at that time,” he said. “Nonetheless, this is a fundamental big positive and a big de-risking event.” Shares will likely continue to rise after Monday’s announcement because it answers investors’ biggest question and thus could attract a new pharmaceutical partner, since drugmakers “need billion-dollar potential drugs,” Yee said. However, risks continue, he noted, including the possibility of the FDA changing its mind, the lack of outcomes data – which became a problem for PCSK9 inhibitors – and the possibility of the drug having safety risks. Plus, Yee noted, Esperion is a single-product company. Esperion shares have risen 160.4% over the last three months, compared with a 4.7% rise in the S&P 500 .
