U.K. inflation hits four-year high as food prices rise

U.K. inflation hit 2.9% in May, the fastest rate in four years, as consumer prices continue to run much higher than the Bank of England’s target. Tuesday’s reading from the Office for National Statistics was above the 2.7% estimate from a FactSet consensus survey, as energy and food prices increased. The Bank of England’s inflation target is 2%. Core inflation, which excludes volatile energy and food prices, was 2.6%, above expectations of 2.4%. The central bank has warned it expects inflation to peak just below 3% in the fourth quarter, largely because of the drop in the pound’s value. “The balance of probability suggests the Bank will continue to ‘look through’ higher inflation and leave rates on hold to support the economy, but if inflation continues to surprise we could start to see members revising their positions,” said Ben Brettell, senior economist at Hargreaves Lansdown, in a note. The Bank of England will meet Thursday. The pound climbed to $1.2717 after the release, rising above the $1.27 handle.

Golden State Warriors win their second NBA title in three years

The Golden State Warriors won their second NBA championship in the past three seasons Monday night, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers, 129-120, in Oakland to clinch the series four games to one. Kevin Durant, who joined the Warriors as a free agent last year, won his first championship ring and led the Warriors with 39 points. Durant was named finals MVP after becoming just the sixth NBA player ever to score at least 30 points in every game in the finals. Teammate Stephen Curry added 34 points. Cleveland’s LeBron James paced the Cavs with 41 points in a tenacious effort. It was the third straight year the Warriors and Cavs met in the finals — last year Cleveland overcame a 3-1 deficit to win their first title. This time around, the Warriors were just too deep, outgunning their opponents as they tied an NBA record by going 16-1 in the postseason.

Friend says Trump weighs firing special counsel Mueller

President Donald Trump is considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the investigation into Russian election meddling, a Trump confidant told PBS NewsHour on Monday. “I think he’s considering perhaps terminating the special counsel. I think he’s weighing that option,” Chris Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax Media and a longtime friend of Trump, said. Ruddy said he thought firing Mueller would be a “significant mistake.” The White House did not immediately issue a comment. Firing Mueller would be a politically explosive move that would likely create a firestorm of harsh criticism from Congress and the public, who overwhelmingly support an independent Russia investigation. Some experts even said the move could trigger Trump’s impeachment. The news came a day before Attorney General Jeff Sessions is scheduled to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee to answer questions about possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

Gold prices settled lower Monday for a fourth session in a row ahead of a Federal Reserve meeting that’s expected to end Wednesday with an increase in interest rates. Palladium futures, meanwhile, posted a gain-their 11th out of the last 12 sessions-with an analyst at iiTRADER attributing the climb, in part, to tight supplies in the near term. September palladium added $8.05, or 0.9%, to end at $864.25, the highest finish since early September 2014, according to FactSet data.
