Sprint launches $100 unlimited talk, text, data plan for two lines

Sprint Corp. has become the latest telecom company to offer a new unlimited talk, text and data plan. On Thursday, the company announced the new package, which includes unlimited talk, text, streaming video, gaming and music as well as nationwide 4G LTE data, for two lines for $100 a month. Additional lines can be added for $30 a month, while a single line can be purchased for $60. A family of four, for example, would cost $160. Stocks open flat amid upbeat jobless claims, Philly Fed report

U.S. stocks on Thursday opened little-changed, as a weekly report offered signs that the labor market remains healthy, and a reading of manufacturing in the Philadelphia region proved upbeat. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was flat at 18,582, the S&P 500 index held steady at 2,183, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was near break-even at 5,232. Jobless claims last week fell by 4,000 to 262,000, representing a one-month low, while so-called Philly Fed data turned positive. The muted moves for stocks come a day after minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee showed a divide at the central bank about when to resuming hiking interest rates. Elsewhere, shares of Wal-Mart were climbing after its second-quarter results beat Wall Street expectations, while Cisco Systems Inc. shares declined after the company said it planned to cut 5,500 jobs. Looking ahead, the market is awaiting clarity from Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen, who will speak at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., on Aug. 26.

Toro announces stock split; beats profit expectations but misses on sales

Toro Co. reported Thursday fiscal third-quarter earnings that beat expectations but sales that missed, and announced a 2-for-1 stock split. The stock split announcement, which will go into effect on Sept. 16, comes three days after the stock’s record close of $94.88 on Monday. For the quarter ended July 29, the lawn care equipment maker said earnings rose $55.8 million, or $1.00 a share, from $53.3 million, or 94 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. The FactSet earnings-per-share consensus was 99 cents.
