More bulls come out in defense of Apple

Shares of Apple Inc. soared close to 4% on Monday as more analysts came out in the company’s defense following flat share-price growth over the last three months and mounting concerns that iPhone demand has started to stabilize. Baird analyst William Power reiterated an outperform rating on Apple’s stock and pointed to a recent survey conducted by Baird that shows a sharp rise in respondents who plan to buy an iPhone over a rival device. “iPhone demand looks strong to us heading into the next iPhone cycle,” he said. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer analyst Andrew Uerkwitz sent a note to clients titled “in defense of Apple” Monday morning, where he reiterated an outperform rating and $155 price target on the stock. Discounting Apple based on concerns of decelerating iPhone growth and a slowing Chinese economy “is unjustified,” said Uerkwitz. He also pointed to data that indicates a high switch-over rate from Google Inc.’s Android to Apple. Shares of Apple traded around $119.90 in recent trade. They are off about 10% from the company’s Feb. 23 record high of $133.

Crude-oil futures rebound as dollar loses ground

Oil futures rebounded Monday, shrugging off worries over a global supply glut and sluggish demand as the dollar lost ground. West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery on Nymex rose $1.09, or 2.5%, to settle at $44.96 a barrel. The dollar lost ground versus major rivals, aiding oil and other commodities. A weaker dollar makes commodities denominated in the U.S. unit cheaper to users of other currencies. The U.S. oil benchmark plunged nearly 7% last week, weighed down by a global supply overhang and uncertainty over demand, particularly out of China.

Dog Days of Summer: Peanut Butter Ice Cream for Your Pooch

By H. Camille Smith

It’s officially the Dog Days of Summer, so this week we’re celebrating our furry friends — cats included — with design-savvy, pet-friendly spaces, DIY recipes and more. Trust us: Your dogs won’t be able to resist Camille’s frozen peanut butter creation.

Cool, creamy and oh-so-yummy, ice cream is my go-to summer indulgence. Not surprisingly, it’s also my pups’ favorite treat. I usually keep the freezer well stocked with store-bought doggie ice cream. But when my local grocery store stopped carrying their favorite brand, I decided to get creative and come up with a recipe for homemade ice cream that my pups would not only love but that would also be somewhat (it is ice cream, after all) healthy for them.

After talking to my vet and reading up on safe ingredients for dogs, I came up with this easy-to-make 4-ingredient recipe that my pups give their lip-smackin’ seal of approval:

Peanut Butter Puppy Ice Cream Recipe
My girls loved their frosty treats so much that I create this fun little video of them getting their ice cream on. And a treat this good is too good not to share so we decided to throw an impromptu puppy ice cream party:

There were tail wags and lip smacks all ’round:

Gold logs 3-session rally to reclaim $1,100 level

Gold futures finished higher Monday, as the precious metal marked a three-session rally after the Federal Reserve’s No. 2 hinted that the U.S. central bank may not hike rates in September as has been anticipated. Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer told Bloomberg TV early Monday that inflation, which is below the Fed’s 2% target, is a key factor for the Fed as it considers raising rates for the first time in nearly a decade. Delaying raising interest rates may weaken the buck, which could help dollar-denominated gold draw bids from investors in other currencies. Gold investors attributed some of gold’s moves on Monday to a retreating dollar and speculators being compelled to cover wrong-way bets that gold prices will fall further. Gold futures for December delivery ended up $10, or 0.9 %, to $1,104.10 an ounce. ounce.

What You Need to Know About Being Pet-Friendly

By Rachel Jefferson

What they don’t know won’t hurt them, right? That’s how one property in Los Angeles felt, with forty percent of residents keeping a pet in their apartment, even though it was against the rules. Property managers all over the country are starting to realize that they need to rethink their “No Pets Allowed” rule, or renters won’t be renewing their leases. Property managers are also finding the benefits in allowing pets, including added fees and deposits. A study found that 81% of people spent the same amount on their pets despite fluctuations in the economy. A pet is a part of a resident’s family, and property managers are learning how to benefit from it.

Fed’s Lockhart: Economy can handle gradually higher interest rates

The economy is healing and more resilient than even a few months ago and can now handle gradually rising interest rates, said Dennis Lockhart, the president of the Atlanta Fed, on Monday. Lockhart, a voting member of the Fed’s policy committee this year, had previously announced his support for a rate hike in September in the Wall Street Journal last week. In a speech in Atlanta, Lockhart said that even “mixed data” wouldn’t change his mind. “Given the progress made over the recovery and the overall recent tone of the economy, I for one do not intend to let the gyrating needle of monthly data be the decisive factor in decision making,” Lockhart said.

Lions Gate poised to benefit from a slimming pay-TV cable industry

Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. is in a better position than many of its peers to benefit from the changing television landscape, according to Macquarie Research analyst Amy Yong, who raised her price target slightly to $46 from $45. Yong cited Lions Gate’s sales of its content to a network of traditional, digital and international buyers as one reason for the price-target upgrade. While demand for television content in skinnier bundles is on the rise, the pay-TV industry lost 240,000 subscribers during the second quarter, Yong said in a note. The gloomy industry outlook caused Yong to lower her price targets for AMC Networks to $79 from $85, Scripps Networks to $67 from $70, Starz to $45 from $50 and Discovery to $35 from $37.

Copy This Room: Design a Kid- and Pet-Friendly Living Room

By Shannon Petrie

It’s officially the Dog Days of Summer, so this week we’re celebrating our furry friends — cats included — with design-savvy, pet-friendly spaces, DIY recipes and more.

We all love our babies (whether they’re of the human, canine or feline variety), but let’s face it, it can be hard to live stylishly with kids and pets running around the house. Designer Brian Patrick Flynn found a solution for this common decorating dilemma in a formerly lackluster Los Angeles living room. Using durable fabrics, smart storage solutions and playful touches, he created a space that works for the whole family. If your living room could use a kid- and pet-friendly makeover, steal these designer tips.

1. Slipcovered Sofa. For families with kids and pets, slipcovered sofas are the perfect living room solution – when they get dirty, just toss the slipcovers in the washing machine to freshen them up. Covered in a navy linen blend, this sofa features extra-deep seats and three layers of thick padding on the arms and back for added comfort.

2. Storage Ottoman. In the original space, an upholstered storage ottoman serves as a coffee table, a place to store toys and extra seating when needed. Learn how to make your own storage ottoman, or buy one ready-made, like this orange patterned piece on casters. Toss the kids’ or dogs’ toys inside when you have company and move it around the room with ease for an additional seat.

3. Dachshund Throw Pillow. Show your love for your four-legged family members by working them into your decor – try a throw pillow with a graphic, animal-inspired print. This playful, reversible dachshund pillow would pop against a neutral sofa.

4. Chalkboard Side Table. Brian Patrick Flynn added a fun, kid-friendly touch to the original living room with DIY chalkboard cube end tables. The metal legs are also great for rooms with pets, particularly teething puppies who like to chew on wood furniture.

Videogame companies set to benefit from console refresh

Leading videogame-industry companies GameStop Corp. and Electronic Arts Inc. are set to benefit from an upcoming refresh in consoles, according to PiperJaffray analyst Michael Olson. The analyst raised his price target on Electronic Arts, which makes popular videogames such as Madden NFL and FIFA, to $85 from $79, and on videogame retailer GameStop, to $56 from $52. He backed overweight ratings on both stocks. Olson said he believes calendar-year 2015 and 2016 will be the equivalent to 2007 and 2008 in terms of a hardware refresh, which should trigger increased software sales. “We believe the footprint of next gen hardware is now large enough to drive sustainable software growth,” he said. For EA in particular, he pointed to the November launch of Star Wars Battlefront, which he said could take off among the growing next-generation console installed base. Shares of both companies were inactive in premarket trade.
