Greek PM resigns, will run for reelection in September vote

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced during a televised address on Thursday that he will resign his post and call for a national election to be held within a month. The most likely election date is Sept. 20, according to Greek press reports citing government sources. Tsipras will now lead Greeks to the polls for the second time since he was elected on Jan. 25. He previously called for the July 5 referendum that resulted in a “no” vote on an austerity-reform package proposed by Greece’s international creditors. In the address, Tsipras said he called the election because he is seeking a “clear mandate for a strong government.” He said he had a “moral and political obligation” to let voters decide who should be the person leading the country in this “new hopeful era.” Tsipras has been facing a rift within his own party over the country’s latest bailout deal, which was approved by the Greek parliament last week after marathon debates. The deal came into effect on Thursday, granting Greece the necessary financing to meet a deadline to repay 3.4 billion euros ($3.8 billion) to the European Central Bank.

GoPro stock hurtling toward six-day losing streak

Shares of GoPro Inc. fell more than 5.6% Thursday afternoon, putting the stock on track for a six-day losing streak. Its shares traded down around $51.53 in afternoon trade, their lowest level since July 8, two weeks before the company’s second-quarter earnings report. Thursday’s sell-off followed a broader market decline, which shaved nearly 250 points off the Dow Jones Industrial Average in afternoon trade. Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt attributed the stock’s recent volatility to technical factors and concerns about valuation. However, McCourt said in a recent note to clients that an analysis of Google Trends, which he believes provides insightful data in terms of sniffing out changes in global sell-through rates for certain consumer products, indicates still strong interest in the GoPro brand. Shares of GoPro are down 4.5% over the last three months, versus a 3.5% decline for the S&P 500, but remain up 17.3% on the last 12 months, compared with just a 3.2% increase for the S&P 500.

Tesla’s stock extends selloff, but analyst reiterates buy rating

Shares of Tesla Inc. fell 4% in recent trade, extending losses from Wednesday, amid increased concerns regarding competition in the luxury electric vehicle market. On Wednesday, Audi unveiled plans for an all-electric sports utility concept vehicle, the e-tron quattro, which it hopes will one day compete with Tesla’s Model X all-electric SUV. However, Stifel analyst James Albertine reiterated a buy rating on Tesla Thursday morning, saying he views Tesla’s competitors, including Audi, as “missing the mark” and “years behind.” Audi expects production to begin in 2018, which Albertine views as too late. “The Model X will have another three years to further distinguish itself among its luxury peers,” he said. Tesla’s shares recently traded down around $245, following a broader market sell-off that shaved more than 250 points off the Dow Jones Industrial Average in afternoon trade. The stock is flat on the last three months, outperforming the broader S&P 500, down 3.7%.
