PC shipments fall for seventh straight quarter

Worldwide PC shipments fell by 5.2% to 64.3 million in the second quarter, but analysts say the market is showing some signs of improvement, according to a new report from Gartner. This was the seventh straight quarter of PC shipment declines, with the strengthening dollar, which has made PCs more expensive in certain markets, contributing to the decline. In the U.K., Brexit – Britain’s exit from the European Union – did not have a major impact on PC sales, but Gartner said it could create uncertainty and weigh on the industry down the road. Lenovo Group Ltd. [s:hk:0992] maintained control of the market despite quarterly declines in shipments. Rounding out the top five were HP Inc. , Dell, Asus and Apple Inc. .

Imperva warns of weak sales, stock plunges

Imperva Inc. revealed Monday that revenues for the fiscal second quarter will be much lower than previously projected, sending the company’s stock down more than 10%. Imperva shares dove to around $43 in late trading Monday, after closing with a 7.6% gain at $48.14.

Millennials Training for Career Ultramarathons

By Suzanne De Vita

Millennials are set to run career ultramarathons and anticipate taking breaks along the way, according to a recently released ManpowerGroup report. They prioritize job security and the opportunity for new challenges and types of work. Based on a global study of 1,000 millennials from across the United States, the report provides practical advice to help employers rethink their people practices for attracting, retaining and developing millennial workers. Here are some highlights:

  • American millennials are preparing to run career ultramarathons. Sixty-six percent expect to work past age 65. Thirty-two percent expect to work over the age of 70, and 12 percent say they will likely work until the day they die.
  • American millennials are working longer and harder than previous generations. Seventy-six percent of American millennials foresee taking career breaks longer than four weeks. Though women are likely to plan breaks to care for others — children, older relatives, etc. — men and women prioritize leisure-related breaks for themselves equally.
  • Globally, millennials are happy to disrupt and be disrupted by new ways of working. While almost three-quarters of working millennials are in full-time jobs today, over half say they’re open to new ways of working in the future – freelance, gig work or portfolio careers with multiple jobs. Thirty-four percent globally are considering self-employment.
  • Ninety-five percent of American millennials are willing to spend their own time and/or money on further training. The report highlights the positive correlation between people’s career success—being more educated, better prepared for employment and higher paid—and their “learnability,” or ability and desire to learn.

“Employers need to listen up and get creative. They simply cannot afford not to appeal to millennials,” says Mara Swan, executive vice president, Global Strategy and Talent, ManpowerGroup and global brand lead for Right Management. “Millennials want progression, but that doesn’t have to mean promotion. We need new ways to motivate and engage employees, like facilitating on-the-job learning and helping people move around the organization to gain experience more easily. And what works for millennials works for the rest of the workforce, too.”

Lots in 2015 Are Smallest on Record

By Suzanne De Vita

Lot_Size_Development_Map

The median lot size of a new single-family detached home sold in 2015 dropped under 8,600 square feet for the first time since Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction (SOC) started tracking the series.

An acre is 43,560 square feet, so the current median lot size is just under one-fifth of an acre. In 2014, Paul Emrath used a football field analogy to help visualize the median lot size that proved to be very popular. So using a football field as a measuring stick, 5.6 median lots would fit between the goal lines of a football field in 2015.

While nation’s lots are getting smaller on average, the regional differences in lot sizes persist. Looking at single-family (attached and detached) speculatively built (or spec) homes started in 2015, the median lot size in New England exceeds half an acre. This is 2.6 times larger than the national median lot.

New England is known for strict local zoning regulations that often require very low densities. Therefore, it is not surprising that more than half of single-family spec homes started in New England are built on some of the largest lots in the nation, with more than half of the lots exceeding half an acre.

The East South Central Division comes as a distant second with the median lot occupying less than a third of an acre. The Pacific division where densities are high and developed land is scarce has the smallest lots, with half of the lots being under 0.15 acres. The neighboring Mountain and West South Central Divisions also report typical lots smaller than a national median, 0.17 and 0.16 acres, respectively.

The analysis above was limited to single-family speculatively built homes. Custom homes built on owner’s land with either the owner or a builder acting as the general contractor do not involve the work of a professional land developer subdividing a property. Therefore, in case of custom homes, lots refer to owner’s land area rather than lots in conventional sense. Nevertheless, the SOC reports lot sizes for custom homes and shows that they tend to have larger lots. The median lot size for custom single-family homes started in 2015 was exactly one acre.

For this analysis, the median lot size was chosen over average since averages tend to be heavily influenced by extreme outliers. In addition, the Census Bureau often masks extreme lot sizes and values on the public use SOC dataset making it difficult to calculate averages precisely but medians remain unaffected by these procedures.

GoPro’s stock soars on heavy volume; short interest at a 5-month high

Shares of GoPro Inc. shot up 12% in active afternoon trade Monday, putting them on track to close at a 2 1/2-month high. Volume climbed to 9.8 million shares, or nearly double the full-day average, with 90 minutes still left in the session. The action camera maker hasn’t issued any press releases since Friday’s close; a spokesperson wasn’t immediately available for comment. The stock has run up 40% since it closed at an all-time low of $8.80 on May 18, 2016. Short interest, or bearish bets made on the stock, is at a five-month high of 26.9 million shares. Many market watchers believe a high level of short interest is bullish for a stock, since good news, or even a lack of bad news, could prompt those who are short to buy the stock to cover their bearish bets. Meanwhile, the stock was still down 32% year to date, while the S&P 500 has gained 4.8%. GoPro is scheduled to report second-quarter results on July 28; the company has reported wider-than-expected losses the past four quarters.
