Loonie weakens as Bank of Canada says drop in exports ‘larger than expected’

The Canadian dollar softened against its U.S. rival on Wednesday after the Bank of Canada said second-quarter gross domestic product was affected by a drop in exports that was “larger and more broad based than expected.” Though the bank left its benchmark interest rate steady at 0.5%, analysts said weak exports are a sign that the Canadian economy might require more monetary easing to drive stronger growth. The U.S. dollar rose to C$1.2896 after the statement’s release, up 0.3% on the day.

Facebook’s stock seen soaring despite ad load slowdown

Shares of Facebook Inc. rose 1% on Wednesday after Morgan Stanley lifted its 12-month price target on the stock to $160 from $150. Analyst Brian Nowak reiterated an overweight rating on Facebook shares, and said he believes the company will beat the fiscal 2017 revenue consensus by 6% and the adjusted earnings per share estimate by 10%, even if ad load growth slows by 50%. Some investors have expressed concerns that a slowdown in ad growth could lead to “material revenue deceleration” in the second half of the year. Those fears have weighed on Facebook’s shares, which are now trading nearly 40% below its median relative P/E multiple, according to Nowak. However, he believes that while ad load growth “will slow,” Facebook’s “large and growing scale and engagement are even more important.” Shares of Facebook have risen 11.4% in the past three months and 49% in the past 12, outperforming the S&P 500 , up 3.5% in the past three months and 14% in the past 12.

Delta’s August computer failure expected to cost company $150 million

Delta Air Lines Inc. said on Wednesday that a three day-long computer failure in early August is expected to cost it $150 million of pre-tax income in the third quarter. Those technology problems, which forced Delta to cancel more than 2,000 flights, should account for around one point of unit revenue decline in the third quarter, of an about 7% total decline, the company said in a regulatory filing. Delta said it was on track for a 18% to 19% operating margin and nearly $1.5 billion of operating cash flow in the quarter, despite the technology failure’s “operational disruption, volatile fuel prices, and continued unit revenue weakness.” Delta shares dropped 12.5% over the last three months, compared with a 3.5% rise in the S&P 500 .
