SunPower shares fall after company misses revenue mark, announces restructuring

Shares of SunPower Corp. fell 0.8% late Wednesday after the San Jose, Calif., solar-power company narrowed its quarterly loss but reported sales under expectations. SunPower reported a loss of $40.5 million, or 29 cents a share, in the third quarter, narrowing a loss of $56.3 million, or 41 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Adjusted for one-time items, the solar-power developer said it earned $97 million, or 68 cents a share, compared with $20 million, or 13 cents a share, a year ago. Sales reached $729 million, compared with $380 million in the third quarter of 2015. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected SunPower to report adjusted earnings of 41 cents a share on sales of $786 million. The company said it was enacting “significant” cost-reduction initiatives in order to face a more uncertain solar market. The company will report on a restructuring program Dec. 7, it said. SunPower said it expects a “slight moderation” of growth in its residential market in the fourth quarter. The company also tweaked its guidance, and said it expects 2016 revenue of $2.43 billion to $2.63 billion and net loss of $295 million to $320 million for the year. Shares had ended the regular trading day down 14%.

Shake Shack shares surge on improved outlook

Shares of Shake Shack Inc. jumped in Wednesday’s extended session after the casual restaurant chain raised its 2016 revenue outlook. Shake Shack reported its third-quarter earnings rose to $6.8 million, or 15 cents a share, from $6.2 million, or 10 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Revenue grew 40.2% to $71.9 million while same-store sales rose 2.9%, slowing from an increase of 17.1% year ago. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast earnings of 14 cents a share on revenue of $69.3 million. The burger chain raised its 2016 revenue outlook to a range of $264 million to $265 million from $253 million to $256 million previously. It also projected same-store sales of 4% to 5% for the year. For 2017, it projected revenue of $348 million to $352 million and same-store sales of 2% to 3%. Shake Shack shares rallied 11% after hours.

Dow trades near all-time closing high

Oil futures end at a one-week high

Oil futures climbed Wednesday to settle at a one-week high, buoyed by a risk-on sentiment among investors that provided a lift to U.S. equities and the dollar. But data showing a second-straight weekly climb in U.S. crude supplies, along with a weekly increase in domestic crude production, kept a lid on oil’s price gains. December WTI crude rose 29 cents, or 0.6%, to settle at $45.27 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That was the highest settlement since Nov. 2, according to FactSet data.

Gold prices settle lower after Trump’s election win feeds a volatile session

Slump in Mortgage Refi Apps Exceeds Purchase Rise

A modest boost in applications for loans to finance a home purchase was outdone by a reduction in mortgage refinance applications.

In the week ended Nov. 4, the Market Composite Index moved down by a seasonally adjusted 1 percent from the previous week.

The index, a measure of home loan application volume, dipped 2 percent when seasonal adjustments are eliminated from the calculation.

10-year Treasury yield hits 2% for the first time since January

The 10-year Treasury yield rose Wednesday to hit 2% for the first time in nine months as expectations mounted that a Donald Trump presidency is likely to lead to expanded fiscal spending. The yield on the 10-year note surged 15 basis points to test a level not seen since January, while the yield on the 30-year bond soared 19.7 basis points to 2.812%, according to FactSet. At the short end of the curve, the two-year was mostly flat at 0.862% after a dropping earlier. Yields and bond prices move in opposite direction.
