Homebuyers Scramble in Year-End Spree

By Susanne Dwyer

Homebuyers are scrambling in a year-end spree to snap up inventory, with for-sale homes moving 5 percent faster than this time last year, according to a data preview from realtor.com®.

“We saw evidence of a stronger-than-normal off-season in September and October due to pent-up demand and surging interest from first-time buyers,” says Jonathan Smoke, chief economist of realtor.com. “Since the election, demand seems to have intensified, possibly in reaction to a jump in mortgage rates. Now buyers seem to feel a sense of urgency as they face the threat of rates that may approach multi-year highs in the months ahead. The downside to this strong fall is that 2017 will begin with a new low volume of available homes for sale.”

The median age of property listings on realtor.com in December is expected to be 88 days, five days less than last December. The median list price, which typically declines in the fall and winter, is expected to remain level at $250,000, 9 percent higher than one year ago and a record-high for December.

Obama sanctions Russia over cyberhacking, expels Russian diplomats

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — President Obama on Thursday ordered the closure of two Russian diplomatic compounds and barred from the U.S. 35 Russians designated as intelligence operatives as retaliation against alleged hacking of the U.S. presidential election. The president also declassified information that he said would help the U.S. and other nations deter cyberattacks by Russian civilians or government agents. The White House acted in response to findings by U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia sought to undermine the campaign of Hillary Clinton and aid the election of Donald Trump. Under the administration’s response, Russia compounds in Maryland and New York will be shut down and 35 Russians have been declared personae non gratae. In a statement, Obama said: “All Americans should be alarmed by Russia’s actions.” Russia has denied involvement and demanded the U.S. offer evidence.

Former HUD Secretary Calls Carson Strong Fit

While advocates for low-income and public-housing residents are alarmed at the prospective head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, one former HUD secretary is not.

President-elect Donald J. Trump has indicated that he intends to nominate former Republican presidential rival and neurosurgeon Ben Carson to be the next secretary of HUD.
