Valeant posts wider loss for fourth quarter as revenue dips

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. shares jumped, then reversed their gains, in premarket trade Tuesday, after the company reported a fourth-quarter loss and decline in revenues, but still beat Wall Street estimates. Valeant, which was immersed in an accounting and drug pricing scandal last year, said it had a net loss of $512 million, or $1.47 a share, in the quarter, after a loss of $385 million, or $1.12 a share, in the year-earlier period. Excluding special items, the company had adjusted EPS of $1.26, ahead of the FactSet consensus of $1.20. Revenue fell to $2.4 billion from $2.7 billion, but were also ahead of the FactSet consensus of $2.3 billion. Joseph Papa, the CEO who was brought in to turn the company around, said it had improved its position in 2016. “We paid all 2017 amortizations and reduced debt by $519 million in the fourth quarter,” Papa said in a statement. “We agreed to divest a number of assets, including several skincare brands, our Dendreon business and smaller international interests. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved our new psoriasis treatment, SILIQ(TM), and we resubmitted our glaucoma treatment, latanoprostene bunod in February 2017.” The company is expecting 2017 revenue to range from $8.9 billion to $9.1 billion. Shares are down 79% in the last 12 months, while the S&P 500 has gained 22%.

Starbucks to open cafes and a Roastery in Milan in 2018

Starbucks Corp. said Tuesday that the first of its Starbucks Roastery locations in the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions will open in Milan in 2018. It will be the fifth location in the world. The Starbucks Roastery is a large retail space where rare coffees are roasted and tasted. The Milan Roastery will be in a 25,500-square-foot former post office on Piazza Cordusio. In time, Starbucks plans to open 20 to 30 Roastery locations around the world. Along with its business partner Percassi, Starbucks will also open a number of smaller cafes in Milan in 2018, hiring 350 employees in Italy. A Starbucks Roastery is heading to Shanghai in 2017 and New York and Tokyo in 2018. Starbucks shares are nearly flat in premarket trading, and down 2.7% for the past year. The S&P 500 index is up 21.7% for the last 12 months.

Bank fights for stake in PHH case to battle CFPB authority

12-Month Low in Pending Home Sales

A drop in the nation’s pending home sales last month is a bad sign for upcoming home sales. The West led the decline.

As of January, the Pending Home Sales Index, an indication of future home sales, was a seasonally adjusted 106.4.

That turned out to be the lowest level for the index in the last 12 months — pointing to lower completed home sales ahead.

Kindred Healthcare tp halt dividend after March to pay debt, invest in growth

Shares of Kindred Healthcare Inc. rose more than 4% late Monday after the company said it will halt its dividend after a March dividend payment in order to pay down debt and invest in growth. Kindred said in a statement its board of directors approved a cash dividend of 12 cents a share, payable March 31 to shareholders of record March 13, and has determined that the company’s stock trading levels “do not sufficiently reflect the value of the company’s quarterly cash dividend.” Shares of Kindred ended the regular trading session up 3.3%.
