Mortgage Executives Recruited

From the board room to the C suites, mortgage firms are making executive changes. In addition, two companies made management changes in their wholesale divisions.

EJF Capital disclosed in a Schedule 13D filing that it intends to nominate two candidates to the board of directors of Mount Laurel, New Jersey-based PHH Corp.

PHH said in a March 9 statement that it maintains active dialogue with its investors, and its corporate governance committee will review EJF’s board candidates.

Oil prices down seven sessions in a row

Oil prices fell Tuesday, with West Texas Intermediate crude down a seventh straight session. Monthly data from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries showed growth in U.S. crude production and Saudi Arabia told OPEC that its output increased in February. April WTI crude fell 68 cents, or 1.4%, to settle $47.72 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Walter Investment posts $529 million loss in 2016; CEO calls results ‘unacceptable’

Walter Investment Management Corp. announced Tuesday morning that it posted a loss in each quarter of 2016, finishing the year with a net loss of $22.2 million in the fourth quarter. That result pushed the company’s total net loss for the year to $529.2 million. Walter Investment CEO Anthony Renzi, who took over in September 2016, said that the company’s 2016 results are unacceptable. …read more

Gold slips, but holds ground above $1,200 ahead of Fed interest-rate decision

Gold futures settled modestly lower Tuesday, but held ground above $1,200 an ounce a day ahead of the Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates. Expectations that the central bank will announce a rate increase on Wednesday have climbed, providing support to the U.S. dollar and pressuring prices for gold. April gold fell 50 cents, or less than 0.1%, to settle at $1,202.60 an ounce.

SEC fines, bars junior EY auditor for insider trading in semiconductor client

The Securities and Exchange Commission fined junior staff auditor Nima Hedayati, an employee of Ernst & Young, $87,000 to settle charges he allegedly traded on inside information about a planned merger between EY client Lam Research Corporation and another semiconductor equipment manufacturer KLA-Tencor Corporation . According to the SEC’s order, Hedayati purchased out-of-the money call options in KLA common stock in his own brokerage account as well as his fiancée’s brokerage account, and encouraged his mother to also purchase KLA shares. KLA’s stock price increased nearly 20% after the merger was announced. EY has terminated Hedayati, who did not admit or deny the SEC’s findings. Hedayati agreed to be suspended from appearing and practicing before the SEC as an accountant, which includes not participating in the financial reporting or audits of public companies for at least five years.

Walter Slashes Servicing, Swings to Profit

Losses turned to profits during the last quarter of 2016 at Walter Investment Management Corp. The mortgage servicing portfolio significantly declined.

During the final-three months of last year, income prior to income taxes came to $27 million. Earnings swung from a $158 million loss the prior quarter.

The results, in addition to other operational and financial metrics, were included in the Tampa, Florida-based firm’s fourth-quarter 2016 earnings report.
